We offer very fine hair and
quills from African
porcupines. The majority of the hair varies in length from about 12" to
18" (30 cm to 45.5 cm). The hair has been cleaned and
sterilized. The porcupine hair come in 1 to 2 ounce bundles. Each buncle contains hair in a range of sizes and we
cannot sort hair by length.
The hair is thicker than that of the North
American porcupine. It may or may not work for making roaches in the
Native American market. Some people like it and some find it too
thick. One customer suggested soaking the hair before tying it to
make it softer and more workable, or using smaller bundles.
Genus
and species: Hystrix africaeaustralis. Wild.
African
porcupines are typically caught by locals for food—the meat is very
sweet and tasty. Some quills also come from animals that have died a
natural death. While African porcupines are not endangered at
present, the demand for quills for arts and crafts is putting pressure on
the population and may lead to the protection of this animal in the
future.
